SUMMARY:Beyond the Birth Story: Understanding Impact\, Power\, and Trauma in Perinatal Care
DESCRIPTION:An in-person training for Washington State professionals who serve families IN Benton/Franklin counties. \nBirth trauma is often misunderstood\, minimized\, or misidentified within perinatal care. While birth is often framed as a joyful milestone\, many birthing people experience moments of fear\, powerlessness\, violation\, or loss of autonomy that leave lasting psychological and relational impacts. These experiences frequently go unnamed\, particularly when clinical outcomes are considered “successful.” This keynote examines birth trauma as a form of perinatal trauma shaped not only by individual events\, but by power dynamics\, systemic inequities\, and how safety and dignity are experienced in birth spaces. Participants will explore how birth trauma presents across emotional\, relational\, and physiological domains\, how it differs from and overlaps with other perinatal mental health\nconditions\, and how it affects partners\, infants\, and providers. Moving beyond individual pathology\, this session invites a broader lens that includes provider impact\, structural inequities\, and trauma-informed cultural change. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of birth trauma and a renewed commitment to building systems of care that prioritize safety\, autonomy\, and dignity for all families. Please note: Lunch will be provided and will be a working lunch to allow time for discussion and connection. \nDate: Monday\, April 20\, 2026 \nTime: 9:00am-4:30pm PT\nPlease note: Lunch will be provided and will be a working lunch to allow time for discussion and connection. \nCost: FREE \nTrainer: Marquita Straus\, MSW\, LICSW  \nLocation:\nEducational Service District 123\n3924 W Court St\, Pasco\, WA 99301 \nRegister Now\nLearning Objectives: \n\nDefine birth trauma as a form of perinatal trauma and distinguish it from other perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.\nIdentify common emotional\, behavioral\, physiological\, and relational indicators of birth trauma\, including early red flags and trauma-specific symptom patterns.\nDescribe key susceptibility and risk factors associated with birth trauma\, including prior trauma exposure\, systemic inequities\, and power dynamics within birth settings.\nExplain how birth trauma impacts not only the birthing person\, but also partners\, infants\, families\, and care providers.\nAnalyze the role of institutional systems\, structural inequities\, and provider dynamics in shaping the prevalence and experience of birth trauma.\nArticulate core principles of trauma-informed and trauma-responsive care in perinatal settings\, including safety\, consent\, collaboration\, pacing\, and relational repair.\nReflect on their own professional role in supporting trauma-informed cultural change within birth and perinatal care systems.\n\nContinuing Education: \n\n6.5 CEUs approved for LICSW\, LMHC\, LMFT.\nThis Program has been approved for 6.5 CEUs for Licensed Social Workers\, Mental Health Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists by the Washington State Society for Clinical Social Work.\n6.5 Contact hours approved for RNs: Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing\, Provider Number 17084 for 6.5 contact hours.\n\nThis is a live\, in-person training and will not be recorded. SUMMARY:Embracing Every Parent: Engaging Non-Birthing Parents in Perinatal Support
DESCRIPTION:This training is open to WA state professionals who serve perinatal families in Washington state. Priority registration for professionals who serve families in San Juan County. \nFor LGBTQIA+ parents\, adoptive parents\, and dads\, welcoming a baby can leave new parents feeling less than welcome in perinatal spaces; these feelings of invisibility can leave non-birthing parents feeling disconnected and increase their vulnerability to perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. In this all-day virtual training\, we will embark on a deep dive into engaging non-birthing parents in support throughout the perinatal period. The training will include a review of perinatal mental health for all parents\, with a deep dive on the unique experiences\, strengths\, and challenges of non-birthing parents\, as well as practical resources for screening\, referral\, and support. Participants can look forward to an interactive training that will include breakout activities\, real-life examples\, and a spotlight from PS-WA dad peer specialist Nathan Friend on the magic of peer support and what he wishes everyone knew about supporting dads. Attendees will come away with concrete strategies to engage non-birthing parents in support. \nDate: Thursday\, April 30\, 2026 \nTime: 9am-4pm PT \nLocation: Zoom \nCost: FREE \nTrainers: Lara Hayden\, MSW\, LICSW and Nathan Friend \nLearning Objectives: \n\nParticipants will be able to name 5 perinatal mood and anxiety disorders affecting birthing and non-birthing parents.\nParticipants will be able to describe 3 unique psychosocial challenges faced by non-birthing parents in the perinatal period.\nParticipants will be able to identify 4 resources to provide effective and affirming support to non-birthing parents throughout Washington.\n\nRegister Now\nContinuing Education: \n\n5.5 CEUs pending for LICSW\, LMHC\, LMFT.\n5.5 Contact Hours approved for RNs: Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing\, Provider Number 17084 for 5.5 contact hours.\n\nAbout the Trainer: \nLara Hayden (they/them) graduated from the UW School of Social Work with a Masters in Social Work in 2010; they are a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and an Approved Supervisor for Washington State mental health professionals seeking licensure. SUMMARY:May You Be Held with Love and Care: Perinatal Mental Health for Latine and Immigrant Families
DESCRIPTION:This training is open to WA state professionals who work with perinatal families in WA state.  \nCulturally Responsive and Community-Centered Approaches for Supporting Birthing Parents\, Infants\, and Families. \nPerinatal mental health is deeply connected to the well-being of birthing parents\, infants\, partners\, and families. Latine and immigrant communities bring with them unique strengths and cultural values that are often dismissed or silenced by systemic barriers\, and these experiences can shape how perinatal mental health is experienced and supported. \nThis training will explore perinatal mental health through the lens of Latine and immigrant family experiences\, highlighting cultural beliefs\, community traditions\, possible stigma in the community\, and structural barriers that may impact access to care. A particular focus will be placed on elevating indigenous practices that have supported and nurtured birthing parents\, leading to healing and positive outcomes. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how migration\, family separation\, economic stressors\, discrimination\, and language barriers can influence mental health during pregnancy and the postpartum period. \nParticipants will learn how to recognize signs that mental health may be impacted for birthing parents and partners\, and how infant and early childhood mental health is closely connected to caregiver wellbeing. The training will emphasize culturally responsive\, community-based ways of caring for families\, including approaches that honor cultural traditions\, community networks\, and collective resilience. \nParticipants will also learn about screening tools\, referral pathways\, therapy options\, medication considerations\, and culturally relevant community supports that can help families access care. Through case examples and interactive discussion\, participants will explore ways to reduce stigma\, build trust with families\, and support Latine and immigrant communities in accessing compassionate and culturally grounded perinatal mental health care. \nThis training is designed for professionals\, community providers\, and advocates across Washington State who work with birthing families and want to increase their confidence in identifying concerns\, responding supportively\, and connecting families in decolonized and culturally responsive ways. \nDate: Tuesday\, May 26\, 2026 \nTime: 9am-4pm PT \nLocation: Zoom \nCost: FREE \nTrainer: Martha Aguiñiga\, MA\, LMHC\, IMH-E III\, PMH-C \nRegister Now\nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe the scope of perinatal mental health\, including common conditions that can affect birthing parents and partners during pregnancy and the postpartum period.\nRecognize signs and symptoms that indicate a birthing parent or partner may be experiencing perinatal mental health challenges.\nExplain the relationship between perinatal mental health and infant and early childhood mental health.\nIdentify culturally responsive and community-based approaches to supporting birthing parents\, infants\, and families.\nDiscuss common screening tools and practices used to identify perinatal mental health concerns.\nDescribe a range of care options including therapy approaches\, medication considerations\, peer support\, and culturally grounded community supports.\nIdentify referral pathways and resources to connect families with appropriate care and support.\nApply practical strategies for responding supportively when concerns about perinatal mental health arise.\n\nContinuing Education: \n\n5.75 CEUs approved for LICSW\, LMHC\, LMFT.\nThis Program has been approved for 5.75 CEUs for Licensed Social Workers\, Mental Health Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists by the Washington State Society for Clinical Social Work.\n5.75 Contact Hours approved for RNs: Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing\, Provider Number 17084 for 5.75 contact hours.\n\nAbout the Trainer: \nMartha Aguiñiga\, MA\, LMHC\, IMH-E (III)\, is an equity-driven Licensed Mental Health Counselor with over 15 years of experience in trauma-informed care\, infant and early childhood mental health\, and culturally responsive clinical practice.
