SUMMARY:Creating a Nest of Care: Perinatal Loss Training for Birthworkers - Monthly Loss Consult
DESCRIPTION:This training is open to birth workers in King County\, WA. \nThis birth worker training centers on the loss of life when intertwined with the womb and birthing.  Join 40 local birth workers in a year-long commitment to growing the web of care necessary to support someone through this loss.  \nCreating a Nest Cohort is a 9-month project provided for free in partnership with Sacred Passing\, Imani’s Light\, and Perinatal Support WA for birthworkers serving families in King County. \nMonthly ongoing learning session on the third Wednesday of the month from 10:00am -1:30 pm. Doors open at 10:00am with brunch provided. Lashanna regularly lives and works in the intersections of death\, art\, education and love. Her end-of-life work is rooted in a community deathcare model.  Lashanna holds a solid\, grounded space for her clients\, regularly bringing great comfort to a time that can feel out of control.  Her knowledge\, skill\, and experience allow her to assist people and their families in their time of death.  Lashanna not only works with people imminently facing death or who have been given a terminal diagnosis; she also works with those living their life fully and wants a doula relationship in place for when death does come closer or an accident occurs. Participants will learn to recognize and differentiate between conditions such as anxiety\, mania\, and psychosis\, and understand when these symptoms require urgent or emergency intervention. The training will also cover safety planning and identifying appropriate community resources. She previously was at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill\, where she was medical director for the Perinatal Psychiatry Inpatient Unit and helped start and served as medical director of NC MATTERS\, a statewide perinatal mental health consultation line. She is an affiliated researcher with Uppsala University in Sweden where she earned her PhD in maternal and child health. Her research interests include better characterization of stress in pregnancy; studying the interaction between obstetrical complications and perinatal stress\, depression and anxiety; and utilizing the microbiota- gut-brain axis to improve diagnosis and treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. She has published in Biological Psychiatry\, Translational Psychiatry\, Archives of Women’s Mental Health\, Nature Communications\, Child Development\, among others. \nKaren Burns\, MSW\, LCSW-A\, PMH-C\, is a Research Instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Program Director for NC Maternal Mental Health MATTERS\, the state’s perinatal psychiatry access program. She is also an outpatient therapist specializing in the treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Karen is certified in perinatal mental health through Postpartum Support International and is a trained Circle of Security Parenting facilitator. For almost two decades\, she has led large-scale clinical and research initiatives focused on mental health and positive youth development. Her current work centers on expanding access to perinatal mental health care across North Carolina through clinical consultation\, training\, and systems-level support. Lisa specializes in providing rural mental health care and collaborating with rural systems of care partners\, providing consultation\, collaboration\, and training to support evidence-based provision of perinatal mental\nhealth services. \nLyndsey Williams\, MSW\, LICSW\, PMH-C (she/her) is a licensed clinical social worker (LICSW) located in Seattle\, WA. She currently practices in Washington\, Idaho\, Maryland and Washington DC. She has worked in various areas of maternal child health since 2012 and has provided reproductive psychotherapy since 2017. She received her bachelor’s degree from Morgan State University and obtained her Masters in Social Work from University of Maryland Baltimore. She has been trained in various aspects of perinatal and conceiving partners’ mental health. She is perinatal mental health certified (PMH-C) through Postpartum Support International and Seleni Institute. Lyndsey focuses on empowerment with self-compassion and acceptance through life adjustments associated with reproductive experiences like pregnancy\, infertility\, endometriosis\, pregnancy/infant loss etc. She uses her passion for writing blended with clinical expertise to create healing narrative therapy tools and help women tell their own stories. She provides training to direct care staff on women’s issues like perinatal mental health and domestic violence and anti-burnout wellness workshops.
