SUMMARY:The Impact of Pain on Perinatal Mental Health (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Date: April 4\, 2022 \nTime: 12pm-1:30pm PST \nCost: FREE \nLocation: Zoom \nPresenter: Katie McGee\, PT\, DPT \nMental health challenges\, such as loneliness during the pandemic\, increase the risk of bodily pain. Likewise\, bodily pain increases the risk of mental health conditions\, such as depression. This bidirectional relationship is particularly pronounced in the perinatal period\, due in part to the prevalence of pain during gestation as well as the risk for significant injuries in the birth process\, including Cesarean scars and perineal tears. Similarly\, childrearing practices often place notable strain on parents’ bodies. This presentation will cover relevant recent research on pain and mental health in the perinatal period. It will also suggest basic ideas for anyone from peers to therapists to better support people in the perinatal period\, or who are fostering or adopting. There will be time for questions at the end.  \nREGISTER NOW\nThis webinar does not provide any Continuing Education Units (CEUs). \nThis webinar will be recorded and available on the Perinatal Support WA webinar page.  If you cannot attend in person\, you do not need to register.  Recording will be uploaded approximately 1 month after the training. \nThis free webinar is available to anyone working with families during the perinatal period and is offered by Perinatal Support WA through a grant from Strengthening Families Washington at the Department of Children\, Youth\, and Families (DCYF). \nKatie McGee\, PT\, DPT\, (they/them) is a white\, queer\, non-binary parent and physical therapist based in Seattle. Their practice centers pregnancy care and gender-affirming care. They have experience volunteering with Perinatal Support of Washington and La Leche League.

Becoming a new parent can be overwhelming\, and it often takes time to adjust to changing roles and unfamiliar experiences. Good support can help ease the transition\, especially if it provides a place for new mothers to come together and express the reality of how hard parenthood can be. Adjusting to Parenthood is a place for women to feel heard and to be honest about the highs and lows of motherhood. It offers a supportive environment in which the full range of postpartum experiences is welcomed\, and the everyday realities of being a new mom are understood. \nAt the end of each group\, we offer a 15-minute question and answer on infant feeding\, infant development\, and infant and adult mental health. Come and get your questions answered! The group is appropriate for any mother who needs support to vent\, to process\, to hear other women’s stories\, and to learn that she is not alone. Expectant moms and moms with babies in arms are welcome.
