SUMMARY:Beyond the Birth Story: Understanding Impact\, Power\, and Trauma in Perinatal Care
DESCRIPTION:An in-person training for Washington State professionals who serve families IN Benton/Franklin counties. \nBirth trauma is often misunderstood\, minimized\, or misidentified within perinatal care. While birth is often framed as a joyful milestone\, many birthing people experience moments of fear\, powerlessness\, violation\, or loss of autonomy that leave lasting psychological and relational impacts. These experiences frequently go unnamed\, particularly when clinical outcomes are considered “successful.” This keynote examines birth trauma as a form of perinatal trauma shaped not only by individual events\, but by power dynamics\, systemic inequities\, and how safety and dignity are experienced in birth spaces. Participants will explore how birth trauma presents across emotional\, relational\, and physiological domains\, how it differs from and overlaps with other perinatal mental health\nconditions\, and how it affects partners\, infants\, and providers. Moving beyond individual pathology\, this session invites a broader lens that includes provider impact\, structural inequities\, and trauma-informed cultural change. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of birth trauma and a renewed commitment to building systems of care that prioritize safety\, autonomy\, and dignity for all families. Please note: Lunch will be provided and will be a working lunch to allow time for discussion and connection. \nDate: Monday\, April 20\, 2026 \nTime: 9:00am-4:30pm PT\nPlease note: Lunch will be provided and will be a working lunch to allow time for discussion and connection. \nCost: FREE \nTrainer: Marquita Straus\, MSW\, LICSW  \nLocation:\nEducational Service District 123\n3924 W Court St\, Pasco\, WA 99301 \nRegister Now\nLearning Objectives: \n\nDefine birth trauma as a form of perinatal trauma and distinguish it from other perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.\nIdentify common emotional\, behavioral\, physiological\, and relational indicators of birth trauma\, including early red flags and trauma-specific symptom patterns.\nDescribe key susceptibility and risk factors associated with birth trauma\, including prior trauma exposure\, systemic inequities\, and power dynamics within birth settings.\nExplain how birth trauma impacts not only the birthing person\, but also partners\, infants\, families\, and care providers.\nAnalyze the role of institutional systems\, structural inequities\, and provider dynamics in shaping the prevalence and experience of birth trauma.\nArticulate core principles of trauma-informed and trauma-responsive care in perinatal settings\, including safety\, consent\, collaboration\, pacing\, and relational repair.\nReflect on their own professional role in supporting trauma-informed cultural change within birth and perinatal care systems.\n\nContinuing Education: \n\n6.5 CEUs approved for LICSW\, LMHC\, LMFT.\nThis Program has been approved for 6.5 CEUs for Licensed Social Workers\, Mental Health Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists by the Washington State Society for Clinical Social Work.\n6.5 Contact hours approved for RNs: Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing\, Provider Number 17084 for 6.5 contact hours.\n\nThis is a live\, in-person training and will not be recorded. SUMMARY:New Volunteer Training for the Parent Support Warm Line
DESCRIPTION:Come volunteer with us! \nThe Warm Line was started by parents who never wanted another parent to feel alone and not know what to do. We offer free phone\, text\, and email support where peer volunteers help parents make a wellness plan\, find resources\, share stories\, and just listen. \n  \nTraining Date: Saturday\, March 28 & Sunday\, March 29\, 2026\, 9:00 am-2:30 pm \nTraining Location: Zoom \nAre you a parent who has experienced and recovered from postpartum depression\, anxiety\, postpartum psychosis\, or other perinatal mental health issues\, or suffered a perinatal loss\, birth trauma\, or experienced the NICU? We are looking for parent volunteers\, including dads\, LGBTQ+ parents\, and BIPOC parents\, to assist those reaching out to our Warm Line for support. \n  \nAbout Peer Support \nThe line is staffed by volunteers who are parents who have experienced a perinatal mood and/or anxiety disorder and have recovered. Parents who call the line often feel alone in their feelings or ashamed of the feelings they have. Talking with another parent who has been in a similar situation validates their struggles and helps with their healing journey. Receiving and providing peer support is unique and powerful for both the volunteer and parent!  \nMake a difference in others’ lives – offer hope and community to other parents! \n  \n4 volunteer positions: \n\nEvening Volunteer: Volunteer 2 evenings\, every 4 -7 weeks by responding (same day or within 12 hours) to callers who leave a voicemail\, email\, or text.\nWeekend Volunteer: Volunteer 3 days\, every 5-8 weeks by responding (same day or within 12 hours) to callers who leave a voicemail\, email\, or text.\nDad Volunteer: On-call position\, return calls within 24 hours. Volunteer when you are available. 1 spot available\nNOT currently recruiting for: Live Answer Volunteer: Answer calls during a 4-hour weekday shift. Might have 1-2 spots available come summer.\n\nVolunteers offer peer support\, wellness planning\, and resources and referrals to callers on a short-term (2 weeks) or long-term (up to 3 months) basis.  \n  \nThe Warm Line Volunteer Experience: \n\nPerinatal Support Washington (PS-WA) provides all the training and support you need to answer calls.\nVolunteers receive training on perinatal mental health issues\, offering peer support\, building wellness plans\, and more!\nVolunteers have access during their shift (and in the evenings and on weekends) to Warm Line staff to answer questions or debrief calls.\nWarm Line volunteers receive discounted registration to most of PS-WA’s regular trainings.\n\n  \nVolunteer Training Logistics: \n\n26 hours of recorded and live virtual training.\nPlease note that the Zoom training is participatory. Learning to create and hold space for people to share their experiences requires learning what it feels like to be with one another and be present. We are creating community through learning and sharing. Volunteers should plan to be at the whole training\, video on for interactive portions\, with limited multi-tasking.  In our busy world\, with online training\, it can be very tempting to think we can do more than one thing at a time. Please give yourself and the community of learners a gift: allow yourself to be with us each day\, fully engaged.\nPlease make arrangements for childcare.\n\n  \nInterested in learning more? \n\nPlease fill out the short volunteer application below\, and we will be in touch with the next steps.\nIf you have any questions or want to learn more before filling out the application\, please contact the Warm Line Volunteer Supervisor at Melissa.burden@perinatalsupport.org\n\n  \nVOLUNTEER APPLICATION\n  \nWhat Warm Line VOLUNTEERS say about their experience: \n\n“Volunteering…allowed me to see the ability I held to help others. I could use my own perinatal experiences to provide support and understanding to those calling. I felt very isolated postpartum and craved community. Being a Warm Line volunteer allows me to extend community and resources to women like myself. I’m able to assist women in a way I wish I could have helped myself.” Emily R.\, Warm Line Volunteer\n\n\n“I have gained confidence that resources are out there and if we all work together\, we CAN support families where they’re at and get them going on their healing journeys. It is so rewarding to me to be able to listen to others’ stories and know I can be a support person\, even for a short time.” Kim G.\, Warm Line Volunteer\n\n  \nWhat Warm Line CALLERS say about their experience: \n\n“Prior to connecting with the warm line\, I felt very alone in my experience… and felt less and less hopeful with each passing day. After speaking with a warm line volunteer\, I felt hopeful. I knew someone understood my experience and was going to help create the connections with providers I was having difficulty facilitating.” Warm Line Caller\n“If WARM [Line] exists\, I am not unique or alone in my issues\, and someone out there cares and believes in the potential for health and happiness for my baby and me. With all the covid isolation\, WARM [Line] has been a candle in the darkness … “ Warm Line Caller\nClick here to read one Warm Line caller’s story.

For birthworkers\, supporting families through loss requires compassion\, sensitivity\, and an understanding of both the emotional and cultural dimensions of grief. This session provides an overview of perinatal and infant loss\, including medical and social considerations\, grief expressions\, and the birthworker’s role in creating supportive\, affirming care. Participants will gain tools for navigating difficult conversations\, supporting memory-making\, and connecting families to ongoing resources. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDefine and differentiate types of perinatal and infant loss (miscarriage\, stillbirth\, neonatal death\, SIDS\, etc.).\nRecognize the emotional\, psychological\, and cultural impacts of perinatal and infant loss on individuals and families.\nIdentify common grief responses and understand how they may differ across cultural\, spiritual\, and familial contexts.\nApply trauma-informed and culturally responsive strategies when working with grieving families\, providing compassionate presence\, memory-making support\, and referrals to bereavement resources.\n\nIntro to The Impacts of Sexual Trauma on the Perinatal Period\nDate: February 19th\nPresenter: Selena Shelley\, MA\, LMHC\, CD\, LCCE \nGiven the prevalence of childhood sexual abuse and sexual assault in this country/world and the impacts that sexual trauma has on the perinatal period\, it is imperative that professionals working with pregnant\, birthing\, and postpartum people better understand how to support and work with trauma survivors. Join us to learn more about the potential impacts of sexual trauma on your clients\, and how to ensure you are providing truly trauma-informed care in your practice. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nChildhood Trauma & ACEs\nChildhood Sexual Abuse & Sexual Assault – Definitions & Prevalence\nCommon Physical/Somatic Impacts of Sexual Trauma on the Perinatal Period\nCommon Psychosocial Impacts of Sexual Trauma on the Perinatal Period\nCommon Mental/Emotional Impacts of Sexual Trauma on the Perinatal Period\nHow to Support Your Clients\nHow to Support Your Self\n\nHow to Inquire and/or Respond to a Disclosure\nDate: February 26th\nPresenter: Selena Shelley\, MA\, LMHC\, CD\, LCCE \nAn important component of providing trauma-informed care to your clients is learning whether and how to inquire about their sexual trauma history\, and how to respond to a client who discloses a history of sexual trauma to you. You may be surprised what you learn about the inquiry and disclosure process during this training and how that impacts your practice moving forward. In order to get the most out of this training\, participants will ideally have attended the Impacts of Sexual Trauma on the Perinatal Period training offered on February 19th. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nListening to Your Intuition\nWhy We Want to Know\nHow Inquiry May Be Received by Clients\nWe Can Do Better\nResponding to a Disclosure\nRole Play/Practice\n\nREGISTER NOW\nAbout the Presenters: \nMarquita Straus\, MSW\, LICSW is a Perinatal Grief & Trauma Therapist\, Death Doula\, and founder of Imani’s Light Grief & Wellness Center. SUMMARY:Supporting Parents After Perinatal Loss Using Story: How Making Space for the Narrative Can Make a Difference (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:So often\, the stories of those who experience perinatal loss (including fertility losses\, miscarriage\, abortion\, TFMR\, stillbirth\, and infant loss) don’t get told. There might not be a provider\, a friend\, or a family member who knows how to sit with the person who experienced the loss and to listen. To simply let the story be and not try to fix it. Losses are such delicate experiences\, and not everyone knows how to hold them. This webinar will aim to increase perinatal professionals’ comfort with facilitating parent storytelling about perinatal loss by discussing and showing ways they can talk to parents about their experiences in a comprehensive way. \nDate: Tuesday\, May 27\, 2025 \nTime: 9am-10:30am PST \nCost: FREE \nLocation: Zoom \nPresenter: Emily Souder\, LCSW-C\, PMH-C \nREGISTER NOW\nThis webinar does not provide any Continuing Education Units (CEUs). \nThis webinar will be recorded and available on the Perinatal Support WA webinar page.  If you cannot attend in person\, you do not need to register.  Recording will be uploaded approximately 1 month after the training. \nThis free webinar is available to anyone working with families during the perinatal period and is offered by Perinatal Support WA through a grant from Strengthening Families Washington at the Department of Children\, Youth\, and Families (DCYF). \nEmily Souder\, LCSW-C\, PMH-C is a licensed clinical social worker certified in perinatal mental health with Masters degrees in applied sociology and social work. Emily offers trainings on birth and perinatal loss story processing and has written multiple books\, including Birth Story Brave\, Reimagined: A Guide for Reflecting on Your Childbirth Experience; Birth Story Held for Loss: A Guide for Reflecting on Your Fertility Experience\, Miscarriage\, Abortion\, TFMR\, Stillbirth\, and Infant Loss; and Sparks: Inspiration for Extinguishing the Power of Fear and Igniting Amusement\, Knowing\, and Trust.
