Suggestions for How Family and Friends can Help

Family and Friends are important during any major life event.  Parents who are experiencing a postpartum difficult adjustment need non-judgmental and practical support:
• Educate yourself about perinatal mood disorders
• Be patient and understanding
• Ask the couple how you can help
• Offer to baby-sit
• Offer to help around the house (cooking, cleaning, shopping, pet care, etc.)
• Bring meals
• Pool together to hire a postpartum doula to help
• Let the mother know you are there for her, even if she doesn’t feel like talking
• Appreciate that the father may also be emotionally affected by the demands and
challenges of new parenthood
• Offer to drive the mother to appointments if she is having trouble getting out of the house
