Foundations in Perinatal Mental Health

Priority registration for WA state professionals who serve families in Chelan, Douglas, Grant & Spokane counties. A limited number of spots are available for WA state professionals serving other counties.

This training covers key concepts and practices in the prevention, identification and treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders
(PMADs), as well as how to link parents to support and treatment. In this training we will discuss the risk factors, etiology, and
symptomatology of PMADs, high risk populations for experiencing PMADs, medication in the perinatal period, screening tools, effective referral, and resource and referrals. Community discussion for each county will be held in the afternoon.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn about the Spectrum of Perinatal Mental Health
  • Screen a parent for risk factors leading to perinatal mood and anxiety disorders by identifying at least four risk factors.
  • Screen a parent for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders by identifying at least three symptoms.
  • Describe medications used during pregnancy and breastfeeding to treat perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
  • Learn about local resources for new parent support.

  • This Program has been approved for 6.5 CEUs for Licensed Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists by the Washington State Society for Clinical Social Work.
  • 6.5 Contact Hours approved for RNs: Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 17084 for 6.5 contact hours.

This free training is offered by Perinatal Support WA through a grant from Strengthening Families Washington at the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF).

About the trainer:

Dr. Jasmine L. Garland McKinney, LCMHCA, NCC, is a Postdoctoral Associate at the University of Maryland, College Park, mother of two little girls, wife, clinical mental health professional, doula, daughter, sister, and Soror, among so many other things. She has completed advanced training in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders with Postpartum Support International and worked closely with the National Birth Equity Collaborative, American Psychological Association, and National Board for Certified Counselors as a fellow supporting their work.
