Land, Look, Listen: A Framework for Perinatal Mental Health Providers Serving Military Spouse Families Webinar

Military families move constantly — every 2–3 years, sometimes more often — and every PCS (Permanent Change of Station) resets the map: new hospital, new commissary, new provider, new community, new unwritten rules. That relocation cycle isn’t background noise to a military spouse’s perinatal wellness — it is the perinatal wellness experience, start to finish. This isn’t only about clinical care (the OB visit, the birth, the postpartum checkup); it’s the entire wellness picture around it — mental health, community, identity, self-care, and support — all disrupted and rebuilt at every move.

Land, Look, Listen takes that literal, repeated cycle of arriving somewhere new and turns it into a training lens for providers, who are, in effect, the next unfamiliar “installation” a family has to land at, look around, and figure out how to trust.

Daina Flood MSIHCM, CD, HA-FSD, gave birth on a military installation at 14 years old — and three months later, found herself supporting another young military spouse through birth. She didn’t have a word for what she was doing for another 35 years, and didn’t know it could be a paid profession until 2024. Today she’s the Executive Director of The Nurtured Nest: Trauma-Sensitive Doula Care, a TRICARE-credentialed, high-acuity perinatal practice serving military families in Central Washington — built from four decades of lived experience as a military spouse and a career spanning substance use, corrections, and family advocacy along the way.
