Perinatal Mental Health Screening & Referrals for Moms & Dads

For WA state providers who practice in Cowlitz, Clark, Lewis & Pacific Counties.

This training will provide an overview of the spectrum of perinatal mental health and how the pandemic has impacted families and providers.  Attendees will learn how to effectively screen moms and dads, how to make effective referrals when there are few mental health resources, and how to talk with parents about their mental health and support parents in making choices about their mental health. This training is appropriate for a range of providers who work with parents and people in the perinatal period including peers, home visitors, doulas, community health workers and midwives.

  • Assess parents and partners for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders by identifying symptoms

  • Effectively make referrals and support parents to access resources
  • Learn about the importance of self-care, wellness and social support

About the Speaker:

Leslie Butterfield, PhD is a clinical psychologist who specializes in pregnancy and postpartum issues. At her Seattle, WA private practice she works with moms and couples struggling with pregnancy and neonatal loss, the transition to parenthood, pregnancy and postpartum mood disorders, and birth related trauma.  Additionally, she has designed and taught the counseling skills curriculum for Seattle Midwifery School and Bastyr Naturopathic University Department of Midwifery for the past 15 years.

In her capacity as an educator, Leslie has provided trainings and consultations to: University of Washington; Singapore KKH Hospital for Women; AWHONN (Association of Womens Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses); Marcé Society; PALS (Pacific Association of Labor Support); API (Attachment Parenting International), NAPS (Northwest Association for Postpartum Support), Catholic Charities, Planned Parenthood, and others.  Recently she has served on the board of PATTCh (Prevention and Treatment of Traumatic Childbirth) as Vice President, and Perinatal Support Washington as the former chair and current board member.

 

This free training is offered by Perinatal Support WA through a grant from Strengthening Families Washington at the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF).
