Perinatal Mental Health Basics

Join us for an in-person training at the Spokane Regional Health District. Together with professionals who interact with parents in the perinatal period, we’ll learn the basics of perinatal mental health and how furthering your knowledge can inform your work.
This training covers key concepts and practices in the prevention, identification and treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), as well as how to link parents to support and treatment. In this training we will discuss the risk factors, etiology, and symptomatology of PMADs, high risk populations for experiencing PMADs, medication in the perinatal period, screening tools, effective referral, and resource and referrals.

Learning Objectives:
- Learn about the Spectrum of Perinatal Mental Health
- Screen a parent for risk factors leading to perinatal mood and anxiety disorders by identifying at least four risk factors.
- Screen a parent for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders by identifying at least three symptoms.
- Describe medications used during pregnancy and breastfeeding to treat perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
- Learn about local resources for new parent support.

About the trainer:
Lisa Malcolm, MSW, LICSW, PMH-C is a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW) with over 20 years of experience in helping professions. A passionate advocate for birthing people experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, Lisa provides mental health treatment to survivors of pregnancy and infant loss, and families who have experienced traumatic birth; she holds a Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C) through Postpartum Support International. Lisa specializes in providing rural mental health care and collaborating with rural systems of care partners, providing consultation, collaboration, and training to support evidence-based provision of perinatal mental health services.
