Perinatal Mental Health for East African Parents: A Community Discussion & Training
This training is designed for Washington state providers who serve East African families. This training will provide an overview of the spectrum of perinatal mental health through a cultural lens. Attendees will participate in an interactive conversation and training to learn how to lead parents in conversations about their mental health, address stigma, effectively screen parents, and advocate for parents as they navigate the US medical system. This training is appropriate for professionals working with East African parents and people in the perinatal period, including pediatricians, primary care providers, RNs, therapists, peers, home visitors, doulas, community health workers and midwives.

Topics include:
- Community discussions about trauma and birth, including common experiences, prevention and support strategies.
- Introduce and discuss the spectrum of mental health disorders through a cultural lens
- Screen parents and partners for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders by identifying symptoms through a cultural lens.
- Identify experiences that increase risk
- Effectively make referrals and support parents to access resources
- Learn about the importance of self-care, wellness and social support
- Discussion about medications during perinatal period.
