KLICKITAT/SKAMANIA COUNTY DEMOGRAPHICS

The Columbia Gorge Region includes seven counties along the Columbia River. The
region includes Skamania and Klickitat counties in Washington, and Hood River, Wasco, Sherman, Gilliam, and Wheeler counties in Oregon. Combined, these counties cover 10,284 square miles and are home to a population of approximately 84,000. Many of the community resources are located on the Oregon side, including two labor and delivery hospitals.

Klickitat County is nearly twice the population of Skamania County. In Klickitat County, 80% of the population is White, 12% is Latino, 3% is Native American, and small percentages are Black, Asian or Mixed Races. In Skamania County, 87% of the population is White, 6% Latino, 2% Native American and small percentages of Black, Asian or Mixed Races. Both counties are above the state and national average for poverty, at about 15% of the residents living in poverty.

Gorge Perinatal Mental Health Initiative

The Gorge Perinatal Mental Health Initiative (PMHI) is a two-year grant-funded project.

The following organizations, agencies, or individuals participate in our task force: Hood River County Health Department Klickitat Valley Health Mid-Columbia Children’s Council Mid-Columbia Medical Center Women’s Clinic NorthShore Parents or people with lived experience Providence Women’s Clinic Roots Northwest Skyline Medical The Next Door, Inc. Washington Gorge Action Programs.

Community Enrichment for Klickitat and Skamania Counties (CEKC) provides information and resources to support the development of sustainable programs and projects that benefit the social and economic wellbeing of rural communities in Klickitat and Skamania counties. CEKC recognizes the need to increase awareness of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and improve/strengthen systems that address it.

CURRENT GOALS FOR KLICKITAT / SKAMANIA INCLUDE:

  • Increase community awareness about perinatal mental health issues
  • Increase collaboration among community-based organizations and providers to better serve perinatal families.
  • Increase resources for new parents, and identify current screening, referral, and treatment practices among clinics.
  • 2023 data collection to better understand screening, referrals, and treatment for parents in the Gorge.
