SKAGIT COUNTY DEMOGRAPHICS

Skagit County (pronounced "skäjet") is located in northwest Washington, with the Cascade Mountains overlooking a fertile valley boasting a variety of agricultural crops. The Skagit River flows westward through the valley toward the beautiful San Juan Islands. World-famous tulip fields blanket the valley in the spring. Flocks of Canadian geese, snow geese and trumpeter swans live here in the winter. Bald eagles soar overhead year-round and great blue herons dot the shorelines.

Each year, more than 1,300 babies are born in Skagit County. Children under age 5 are more racially and ethnically diverse than the population of Skagit County as a whole. Nearly 60% of Skagit County’s youngest children live in economically-stressed families, with incomes under 200% of the federal poverty level (FPL).

SKAGIT COUNTY PERINATAL MENTAL HEALTH TASK FORCE

Skagit is not currently receiving the PMHI Grant. They were most recently funded ( July 2021-June 2023)

Skagit's Perinatal Mental Health Taskforce was reinvigorated this past fall, and includes a variety of health, behavioral health and community organizations that serve pregnant individuals and parents with very young children.

The Perinatal Mental Health Task Force works closely with the Children's Council of Skagit County and Help Me Grow Skagit to support the overall health and well-being of Skagit's youngest children, starting in pregnancy.

Skagit County Public Health pursued this funding to ensure the continuation of two local perinatal support groups as well as to increase access to quality services for people in the perinatal period. Public Health knows that the first few years of a child's life lay the foundation for lifelong health and well-being, and that all parents/caregivers deserve to be able to connect with the supports they need/want in their parenting/child-rearing journeys.

CURRENT GOALS FOR SKAGIT COUNTY INCLUDE:

  • Resource sharing and building local capacity to improve perinatal mental health supports
  • Group and 1:1 peer support
  • Improving the skills of behavioral health therapists and other professionals who serve people in this important phase of life.
