STEVENS/FERRY COUNTY DEMOGRAPHICS

Stevens-Ferry Stevens County is located near the northeast corner of Washington, bordering both Canada and Spokane County. The County is rural and ranks fifth in the state in terms of land area and 28th in the state for population density. Most of the Spokane Indian Reservation is located in Stevens County on 237.5 square miles. Colville is the largest town in the county. Our population between both counties is around 60k and are spread out in the towns and valleys, all the way to the mountain tops in some areas. Our greatest challenge is the fact that 78% of our residents fall below the 200% Federal Poverty Line therefore transportation, food, housing and the capacity to attend appointments-especially in the winter, can be a catastrophic event. We have one birthing hospital with 4 FP/OB's, 1 ARNP/CNM home/clinic birth option and a community lay midwife who has attended births for 40 years around here. In a recent conversation with the DCYF intake coordinator, the rate of reports for lack of PNC or prenatal care has risen significantly in the past 3 years. This is why we need grassroots efforts to improve the outcomes of our residents and reduce those SDOH barriers by providing more localized if not in home support in their prenatal care needs.

STEVENS-FERRY PERINATAL MENTAL HEALTH TASK FORCE

Stevens-Ferry County is the recipient of the Perinatal Mental Health Initiative (PMHI) Grant. The funding is two years, July 2023 thru June 2025. The PMHI is a partnership between local grant funded organizations, Perinatal Support Washington, and the funder Strengthening Families Washington, a program within the Department of Children, Youth & Families. The PMHI focuses on perinatal mental health capacity building for local communities aimed at increasing awareness of perinatal mental health disorders amongst providers and families, increasing perinatal mental health screening and appropriate referrals, and creating easy pathways for families to access the care they need. Currently, there are 11 funded communities in Washington state.

The Stevens-Ferry task force is hosted by Roots on the Road, maternal mental health and family therapy created to bring awareness and build professional education, and access to care to people in NE Washington.

Our newly formed Task Force hopes to bring together birth professionals and community members serving people in the perinatal period to discuss gaps in care, how to integrate doulas into prenatal care, perinatal access to care and bring awareness to our community in efforts to reduce the stigma of asking for help at any point in the pregnancy and parenting years ongoing.
