Tell us a little about the PERC Program, who it serves, and what sets it apart from other methods of care.
PERC is our Parent Resilience Program for parents who are wanting support emotionally while navigating all of the changes of the perinatal period. For us, this means whether you are planning or already up to 2 years postpartum and experiencing emotional challenges, you can be culturally matched with someone who has been through similar if not, the same life experiences. Compelling data shows that this kind of culturally matched care improves health outcomes and the ability to be and feel seen!
What do you like best about your role?
So far, I really love watching families bloom through being vulnerable enough to let me see the very intimate details of their lives. I’ve often shared with families that when they allow me into their moments with them it not only heals them but myself as well. The beauty of reciprocated healing is unmatched.
How would you explain the necessity of culturally matched care?
There is a beauty in the way we talk, navigate shared experiences, and even show up in the world. Being culturally matched takes away the burden of having to explain every seam that makes up our cultural and social tapestries.
How does PERC help create equity on a greater scale?
There’s a lot of flexibility with PERC, when it comes to accessibility to support you there are options for text, call, video and home visits. We also do quite a bit of resource connection and basic baby need giveaways.
What are some common themes that you see new parents experiencing?
I hold space often for those facing a sense of loss of self, navigating the impacts of colonial harms, anxiety and depression, and navigating relationships with loved ones. My goal is to affirm these experiences and allow enough space to sit with them as they need. Then when families are ready to move forward or access the wellness toolbox I am there and ready to guide them on this path.
